Daily Participation
Your energy, presence and daily preparation will contribute to the quality of our experience this semester. Class participation is graded daily
(5 points per day/period). Poor attendance, being tardy, coming to class unprepared, not participating and/or engaging in disruptive behavior will affect your class participation grade.
Come to class…attending class regularly is the most important thing you can do to ensure your success in any course. Attending class is essential in a physical education course because the classroom experience provides daily activities and information that cannot be made up. More than two absences, excused or unexcused, each quarter/term will impact your ability to keep up in this class and have an impact on your final term grade.
Be on time…class begins when the tardy bell rings. You will be given five minutes to prepare to walk. If you are not in your seat prepared to walk within 5 minutes of the tardy bell ringing, an unexcused tardy will be recorded in SIS. One participation points will be deducted from your daily participation grade for each 5 minutes that you are tardy.
Come to class prepared… it is imperative that you come to each and every class period prepared to actively participate. Being “prepared to actively participate” is defined as wearing the proper shoes and clothing each day, and having read any assigned articles.
Weather restrictions … we will walk outside whenever possible. The factors that would cause the class to remain inside are 1) temperature lower than 25 degrees or higher than 85 and/or 2) Red air quality. In a situation that the class remains inside, the class will participate in an inside activity which may include a Fitness DVD.
Fitness Journal
Each student will be provided with a folder which will be used for your Fitness log. You will keep a Walking Log of your time, distance and heart rate for each day of your walk. In addition, readings may be assigned throughout the semester. After each reading assignment, you will be asked to write a reflection. Grades will be entered on a weekly basis during the semester.
Absences
Unexcused absences will result in 0 points for the day. Students will be allowed to make up a maximum of 3 class periods per term by exercising outside of school time. An hour of exercise may be submitted for 1 period; submissions must be done on the form supplied and signed by a parent/guardian.
Grading Calculation
Your final grade for the term will be determined based on your performance in two areas:
Daily Participation and your Fitness Log. These areas contribute to the final grade as follows:
Daily Participation 50%
Fitness Log 50%
There are NO extra credit options.
